China approves big GMO budget amid food worries

China's State Council, led by Premier Wen Jiabao, recently approved funding for a program designed to support and promote indigenous genetically modified crops. The initiative comes at a time of increased anxiety over global food security and could accelerate and expand commercial production of GMO rice or corn. The program budget provides a substantial increase in funding for GMO research and the development of safety standards for GMO food sources through 2020.
