Government representatives meeting for the Group of Eight (G8) summit this week have announced support for the role of biotechnology in tackling the issue of gloabl food security. The G8 called for investment in "science-based solutions to better achieve sustainable food and fuel production." Leaders cited the potential benefits of advancing biotech food production including: greater nutrition for impoverished peoples, increased crop yields and a decrease in vulnerability to environmental challenges such as drought or poor soil.
